NFC Signs: Troubleshooting Unexpected Behavior

Steps to determine why your learners are unable to check in using an NFC tag.

Written by Lucas Minarro-Rey

A student is having trouble checking in with an NFC tag? Check the following points with your school's administrator.

4️⃣ Other cases

1️⃣ Check the session and the room

Check the room listed on the session sign-in sheet. The "Check In via NFC" button appears in the app only if at least one NFC sign is associated with that room. If the scanned tag is not associated with the session room, the message “The NFC tag does not match the classroom” appears.

In Settings > Locations, check the signs displayed for the room.
In Settings > NFC, check the pairing and location of the sign. The "To be configured " status indicates that the room or location is missing. Location is used only for the QR code.

2️⃣ Check the hours of operation

In the sign settings, check the Access Hours. The time frame is calculated based on the session schedule. If no access hours are listed, you can sign in from 10 minutes before the start time to 10 minutes after the end time. With two time periods, sign-in is closed between the start period and the end period. Outside of the designated time frame, the learner sees the message: “You are outside the attendance tracking window; please contact the instructor.” If validation is still blocked despite a configuration that should allow it, contact support to have the saved settings verified.

3️⃣ Check the QR code

Make sure that QR Code Signing is enabled for the sign, that its location is specified, and that location access is allowed on the phone. The maximum distance configured for the sign applies to the QR code. Possible messages include “You are too far from the training center to sign in” or “GPS accuracy is insufficient… ". If QR code signing is disabled or if the sign is not located, the app displays the message “An error occurred while validating your signature.”

4️⃣ Other cases

If your institution has enabled an IP address restriction, it also applies to NFC signing. The learner then sees "Signature failed." Please connect to the institution's Wi-Fi network and try again. "Make sure it's connected to the establishment's Wi-Fi, without a VPN."

On the iPhone, Apple Pay opening instead of Edusign is a known issue. The learner must log in to the app and tap " Check In via NFC " before holding their phone up to the reader. If the problem persists, the user can sign in via QR code if QR code signing is enabled for the sign.

Is the problem still occurring? Contact support and provide the session details (date and time), the room, the sign ID, the number of learners affected, and the message displayed.
